History

Another cocktail originating in Cuba in the early 20th century – and another mystery. Who drank history’s first Daiquiri? Was it the locals who frequented a beach called Daiquiri near Santiago, or was it a bunch of Americans working in a nearby iron mine? In either case, it’s likely that the first Daiquiris were made with ice shaved off big blocks as was the practice a century ago. In the 1920s the Daiquiri found a new (and historically reliable) champion in Constantino Ribalaigua, the bartender and later owner of Havana’s El Floridita bar who improved the original Daiquiri recipe by adding crushed ice and maraschino liqueur.

In Havana this drink became known as a “Daiquiri Floridita”. Although “Frozen Daiquiris” have since flourished around the world and may be found in just about any bar with an ice machine and a bottle of Havana Club, few are able to rival the snowy concoction still served at El Floridita.
